British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to resign on Monday and outline a timetable for his departure, according to a report in The Observer newspaper, as a deepening crisis within the Labour Party threatens to end his leadership.
The report, published Saturday, claims Starmer has been discussing the matter with his wife at the Prime Minister’s official country residence, Chequers, before reaching a final decision. Senior Labour figures anticipate a clear statement on his future as early as Monday.
However, a government source pushed back, insisting that Starmer “remained focused on getting on with the job of governing” and pointing to his previous statements to that effect.
The threat to Starmer’s position has been building for months but intensified sharply on Friday when his rival, Andy Burnham the popular Mayor of Greater Manchester won a parliamentary seat in a by-election. The victory clears the path for Burnham to mount a formal leadership challenge.
Starmer responded defiantly on Friday, vowing to fight any challenge and urging his party “not to tear itself apart with infighting.”
Yet pressure has mounted significantly: More than 100 elected Labour lawmakers roughly a quarter of the party’s representatives in the House of Commons have publicly called for Starmer to quit or set out a timetable for his exit.
The developments mark a dramatic turn for Starmer, who led Labour to a landslide victory in the 2024 general election but has faced growing discontent over his leadership style, policy delivery, and handling of internal party dynamics.
As Britain awaits Monday’s potential announcement, the coming days could determine not only Starmer’s political future but the direction of the Labour Party and the stability of the UK government.
