Iran’s national football team captured hearts far beyond the pitch on Monday after leaving a handwritten note in the locker room of SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles following their 0-0 draw against Belgium in Group G of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to Iranian news agency ISNA, the message paid tribute to Iran’s rich history while striking a powerful tone of goodwill, reading: “From the ancient Persia of thousands of years ago to the civilised Iran of today, the spirit of Iran remains alive and steadfast.
We came to Los Angeles with pride, competed with honour and leave with dignity.”
The note quickly went viral, resonating with football fans around the world for its grace and its call for unity.
The result itself was a hard-fought one, with much of Iran’s resilience owed to goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand, who delivered a standout performance between the posts.
The 33-year-old made seven saves, including four diving stops and three high claims, and earned the Superior Player of the Match award. Belgium were further hampered when defender Nathan Ngoy was sent off in the 66th minute, leaving them to play out the final stages with ten men.
Iran’s disciplined defensive showing drew widespread praise as a sign of the growing strength of Asian football on the world stage.
With two draws from their opening two matches having previously held New Zealand to a 2-2 stalemate Iran sit second in Group G and remain firmly in contention for a place in the Round of 32.
Egypt lead the standings following their victory over New Zealand, while Belgium are third.
Iran will now travel to Seattle for a decisive final group-stage fixture against Egypt on Saturday, knowing that a positive result could send Team Melli into the knockout rounds carrying with them a message of peace that has already made an impression far beyond the football field.
