CALABAR , CROSS RIVER – A survivor of gender-based violence in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State has received renewed hope and economic support after the Gender and Development Action (GADA) intervened in her case, providing livelihood assistance to enable her rebuild her life.

The survivor, who endured years of domestic violence in her marriage, was supported with essential needs including food, accommodation and a business starter pack aimed at helping her regain financial independence and stability.

Before the intervention, the survivor faced repeated physical abuse from her husband, which affected her physical and emotional wellbeing. She said her experience left her living in constant fear and uncertainty.

Narrating her ordeal, she explained that the violence became unbearable, adding that on two occasions her husband broke her teeth and inflicted injuries on her shoulder.

She said the situation affected every aspect of her life, especially her ability to provide for herself, until she was referred to GADA for support.

Following the intervention, the survivor has started a small business with the livelihood tools provided, marking a transition from dependency and hardship to self-reliance.

The development reflects GADA’s approach to gender-based violence response, which focuses not only on immediate protection but also on recovery, empowerment and long-term reintegration of survivors into society.

GADA’s intervention highlights the importance of survivor-centred support systems that combine protection, care and economic empowerment to help victims of violence rebuild their future.

The organisation has continued to advocate for stronger community response to gender-based violence, while encouraging survivors to seek help and access available support services.
