A’Ibom To Impound Unregistered Keke, Announces Free Internet At Victor Attah Airport

UYO – Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has announced plans to launch free internet service at the Victor Attah International Airport while directing all commercial tricycle (keke) and minibus operators to register on the state’s digital transport database as part of measures to strengthen security and improve public services.

The governor made the announcements during the July Government House Monthly Prayer Service at the Latter House Chapel, Government House, Uyo, where he said the free digital registration of transport operators would enable commuters to identify drivers and improve public safety across the state.

“We are digitally registering all our keke and minibus owners and riders in the state for free, and I think from August, it will be possible for you to know the names of the driver, rider or transporter of any minibus or keke that you are boarding,” Eno said.

He warned that operators who fail to comply with the registration exercise would have their vehicles impounded, stressing that the initiative was aimed at preventing criminals from disguising as commercial transport operators.

According to the governor, the state government is determined to strengthen its security architecture as Akwa Ibom continues its drive to position itself as a preferred tourism and investment destination.

He said the digital database would provide proper identification of transport operators and enhance security management across the state.

The governor also disclosed that the state would soon commence full free internet service at the Victor Attah International Airport, describing the initiative as part of his administration’s efforts to improve public services and expand digital infrastructure.

He said the airport internet service would enhance passengers’ travel experience while supporting the state’s vision of becoming a leading tourism destination.

Beyond transportation and digital connectivity, Eno reiterated his administration’s commitment to environmental protection, warning residents against indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainage channels.

He announced that the government would strictly enforce the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, declaring that there would be no movement during sanitation hours and that violators of the state’s environmental sanitation laws would be prosecuted.

“There will be no more movement on sanitation days,” the governor said, urging residents to support government efforts to keep Akwa Ibom clean.

Speaking on social welfare, Eno said the Ministry of Economic Planning would update the state’s Social Register to accommodate more vulnerable residents under the ongoing food distribution programme across the 31 local government areas.

He thanked the people of Akwa Ibom for their continued support and prayers, noting that their cooperation had contributed to the peace, growth and development being witnessed across the state.

Earlier, Pastor Emmanuel Bassey of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, who delivered a sermon titled “Divine Rechristening” from Isaiah 62:4, called on Akwa Ibom people to renew their commitment to the state’s transformation and embrace lives of purpose, faith and service.
