The Anambra State security outfit, Agunechemba Security Squad, says it has dismantled suspected gunmen’s camps in Orumba North and Orumba South Local Government Areas, recovering a cache of weapons, including two General Purpose Machine Guns and locally made rocket launchers.
The operation, announced on Sunday, August 2, 2026, followed intelligence gathering and undercover missions carried out by operatives at major security flashpoints across Anambra South Senatorial District in recent days.
In a statement, the Publicity Secretary of Agunechemba, Mr Nweke Nweke, said the recovered locally made rocket launchers had been handed over to the Nigerian Army.
He described the operation as a major breakthrough in the fight against insecurity in the state.
According to Nweke, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for the operations of the Agunechemba Security Squad and reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to working with the outfit and other security agencies to combat crime in Anambra.
“The Agunechemba Security Squad has recorded another major success in the fight against insecurity following the dislodgement of gunmen’s camps in Orumba North and Orumba South Local Government Areas and the recovery of a cache of arms, including two General Purpose Machine Guns and locally made rocket launchers, which were handed over to the Nigerian Army.
“The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for the operations of the Agunechemba Security Squad and reiterated that the Army will continue to partner with Agunechemba and other security organisations in tackling crime and criminality in the state.
“This achievement is the result of intelligence gathering and undercover operations carried out at major security flashpoints in Anambra South Senatorial District over the past few days,” he said.
Nweke added that the recovery and handover of the weapons underscored the outfit’s commitment to combating crime and strengthening security across the state.
He disclosed that the handover ceremony took place on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at the office of Agunechemba’s Director of Operations in Awka and was led by Chief Chinenye Ihenko.
Speaking during the event, Ihenko, who represented the Governor’s Special Adviser on Community Security, Kenneth Emeakayi, described the transfer of the recovered weapons as a demonstration of the strong partnership between Agunechemba and the Nigerian Army.
He stressed the importance of sustained collaboration with federal security agencies and pledged continued joint efforts to improve security across the state.
According to him, the operation that led to the recovery of the weapons marked one of the outfit’s most significant achievements in its fight against criminality.
Ihenko also assured residents that Agunechemba would remain committed to its mandate under the state’s homeland security framework.
He commended the operatives for successfully carrying out the mission without suffering any casualties despite coming under attack from armed gunmen.
“This operation ranks among our greatest achievements. Our team carried out the mission successfully without recording any casualties. When confronted, the gunmen fled with injuries, abandoning their weapons.
“We appreciate Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his unwavering support, which has strengthened our efforts to reclaim areas previously occupied by criminals, particularly in Orumba North, Orumba South, Ihiala and Ogbaru Local Government Areas,” he said.
He urged residents to continue supporting Agunechemba, noting that tackling insecurity requires the collective efforts of both security agencies and the public.
Also speaking, the Commander of the 302 Artillery Regiment (General Support), Onitsha, Col. Buteus Yakubu, represented by Lt. P.O. Idowu, praised the achievements of the security outfit.
He said the Nigerian Army was encouraged by the growing collaboration among the military, the Nigeria Police Force in Anambra State and Agunechemba in the fight against crime.
The event concluded with the formal handover of two General Purpose Machine Guns and a locally made rocket launcher to the Nigerian Army, followed by interactions between military personnel, Agunechemba officials and members of the Anambra State House of Assembly.
