Brake Failure Sparks Multiple Crash At Ikpoba Hill, Three Injured, Six Vehicles Damaged

EDO, BENIN CITY – At least three people were injured and six vehicles damaged on Sunday when a 40-foot tanker reportedly suffered brake failure and crashed into several vehicles at Ikpoba Hill in Benin City, Edo State.

The tanker, said to be laden with groundnut oil, was descending the hill from the Ikpoba Hill/Ramat Park axis when it reportedly developed a brake problem, triggering a chain collision involving several vehicles.

An eyewitness, Mr. Ken Omusi, said the tanker driver struggled to regain control but lost it after the vehicle reportedly hit a pothole near the Ikpoba River Bridge.

According to Omusi, the impact caused the steering wheel to jerk violently, sending the tanker off course and into other vehicles. The ensuing collision left at least three people injured and six vehicles damaged.

Another eyewitness, Kayode Folorunsho Ogedengbe, said he was at the scene when he heard people shouting and turned to see the tanker crashing into other vehicles.

Ogedengbe said the tanker first rammed into a Toyota Corolla, which subsequently collided with another vehicle, causing further damage.

He put the number of damaged vehicles at six, including the tanker and an Eco bus.

According to him, three people sustained injuries in the crash and were rushed to hospital by community members and passersby. Some of the victims were reportedly trapped beneath the damaged vehicles before being rescued.

Emergency responders, including personnel from the Edo State Emergency Management Agency, Federal Road Safety Corps, police and fire service, later arrived at the scene to assist with rescue operations, manage traffic and prevent further danger.

The crash caused significant traffic disruption along the busy Ikpoba Hill corridor, with motorists forced to navigate the affected section of the road as emergency workers battled to clear the scene.
