As His Excellency, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, marks his 60th birthday today, January 28, 2026, Nigeria celebrates a man whose journey through public service has been defined by an enduring commitment to democracy, good governance and the pursuit of a better nation. Born on January 28, 1966, in Toru-Orua, Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, Dickson has risen through the ranks of public service, serving at different times as Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, member of the House of Representatives, two-term Governor of Bayelsa State and Senator of the Federal Republic.

At 60, Senator Dickson represents a generation of Nigerian political leaders whose experiences have traversed some of the most important periods of our democratic journey. What has remained particularly remarkable about him is his belief in democratic institutions and his willingness to speak about the need for justice, fairness and a political system that works for ordinary Nigerians. His politics reflects a conviction that leadership must be anchored on responsibility and service rather than the privileges of office.

In a political environment where principles are too often sacrificed for convenience, Dickson has continued to project a style of politics that places considerable emphasis on dialogue, political tolerance and institutional democracy. His interventions on national issues have consistently reflected his belief that Nigeria’s progress depends on strengthening institutions, deepening democracy and building a society where justice and equity are not merely political slogans but fundamental principles of governance.

His years as Governor of Bayelsa State remain an important chapter in that public-service journey. His administration pursued programmes across education, healthcare, infrastructure and human-capital development. Beyond individual projects, however, his political trajectory demonstrates the importance of experience, institution-building and continuity in public leadership. These are qualities Nigeria must increasingly demand from those who seek the privilege of leading its people.

Perhaps one of Dickson’s greatest political strengths is his ability to maintain his convictions while recognising that democracy requires engagement with people of differing opinions. Authentic politics should never be reduced to hostility, bitterness or the destruction of those who disagree with us. It should be about ideas, persuasion, compromise where necessary and, above everything else, fidelity to the democratic process. These are values that have become increasingly important as Nigeria searches for a new political direction.

Nigeria today stands at another defining moment in its history. Across the country, millions of citizens desire a nation where security is guaranteed, institutions function effectively, opportunities are available to young people and leadership is accountable to the people. Achieving that Nigeria will require a new political culture built around competence, integrity, honesty and genuine patriotism. Experienced leaders who remain committed to these values have an important role to play in nurturing the generation that will take the country forward.

I believe Nigeria is approaching an era in which a new generation of leaders must emerge, leaders who understand that politics cannot forever remain an avenue for personal enrichment or the preservation of political empires. The Nigeria of our dreams will require men and women prepared to put country above personal ambition and democratic institutions above individual interests. Senator Henry Seriake Dickson’s experience and continuing participation in our national discourse place him in a position to contribute significantly to that process of political renewal.

His 60th birthday therefore provides an opportunity not only to celebrate the man, but also to reflect upon the ideals that should define Nigerian leadership. Integrity matters. Honesty matters. Character matters. Respect for democratic institutions matters. Above all, the willingness to serve rather than merely rule matters. Nigeria can indeed become great again when these principles become the foundation upon which our politics and governance are built.

Today, I join his family, friends, political associates, the people of Bayelsa State and Nigerians across the world in celebrating His Excellency, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, at 60. May this milestone usher him into an even greater season of wisdom, strength and service to our nation. May his voice continue to contribute to the search for a more democratic, prosperous, united and just Nigeria.

Happy 60th Birthday, Distinguished Senator Henry Seriake Dickson.
