CALABAR – Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, has provided financial assistance to the family of late veteran journalist, Mr. Anietie Akpan, to support preparations for his final rites.

Otu also mourned the journalist, describing him as “a man of stature” whose contributions to journalism and public life would remain indelible.

The governor conveyed the support and his condolences through his Chief Press Secretary and Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Linus Obogo, who visited the bereaved family alongside the Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Affairs, Mr. Nsa Gill, and leaders of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River State Council.

The delegation met Akpan’s widow, Mrs. Imaobong Anietie Akpan, and daughter, Etinyene Anietie Akpan.

Obogo said the governor wanted to visit the family personally but official engagements prevented him from doing so.

He said Otu therefore sent the delegation to convey his sympathy and solidarity to the family and provided financial support to assist with arrangements for the late journalist’s final rites.

According to Obogo, the governor’s intervention reflected his recognition of Akpan’s contribution to journalism and public discourse.

He described Akpan as a respected media professional whose death had created a loss for the journalism community.

Obogo said Otu also recognized the wider role of journalists in documenting events, informing the public and contributing to societal development.

He assured the family that the state government shared in their grief and prayed that God would grant them the strength to bear the loss.

The NUJ Cross River State Council Chairman, Comrade Archibong Bassey, thanked Otu for supporting the bereaved family and the journalism profession in the state.

Bassey said the governor’s intervention would assist the family and the media community in giving Akpan a decent farewell.

Responding on behalf of the family, Etinyene thanked Otu for identifying with them during their period of grief.

She said the family appreciated the governor’s support and his decision to stand with them at a difficult time.
