Chelsea took advantage of a second-half Manchester United meltdown to win at Stamford Bridge, deepening the crisis around United boss Michael Carrick.
The defeat was United’s third in a row and extended their winless run to nine games in all competitions, their worst stretch since October-November 1988. It was also their fourth Premier League loss of the season, leaving them 16th, a single point clear of the relegation zone.
United had been the livelier side before the interval. Matheus Cunha had a close-range header ruled out for offside after a VAR check, Bruno Fernandes missed a decent chance, and Amad Diallo twice failed to beat Chelsea keeper Mike Penders. Chelsea’s fans booed their team off at half-time.
The hosts came out transformed. Five minutes after the restart, Morgan Rogers cut through the United defence and lifted the ball over the goalkeeper. In the 64th minute, VAR spotted Lisandro Martinez hitting Wesley Fofana in the face with his arm, and Cole Palmer converted the resulting penalty. Martinez, already on a yellow card, was shown a second and sent off.
Chelsea could have added more. Estevao, making his first Premier League start of the season under Xabi Alonso, had a goal chalked off for offside, and substitute Valentin Barco missed a clear late opening. United nearly grabbed a consolation in stoppage time, but Bryan Mbeumo’s effort struck the crossbar.
Chelsea moved up to fourth, while United could end the weekend in the bottom three, with Carrick’s position looking ever more uncertain.
