Yakubu Thanks Supporters After Primary Loss, Faults Skewed Process

John Yakubu, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aspirant for the Edo South Senatorial District by-election, has expressed heartfelt gratitude to his supporters following his defeat in the party’s primaries on July 21, 2025.

In a statement, Yakubu praised the “unparalleled” support from PDP faithfuls, which he said was driven by a shared desire for quality representation in the Senate. The by-election, set for August 16, 2025, aims to fill the vacancy left by Senator Monday Okpebholo, now Edo State Governor.

Yakubu, one of three cleared aspirants alongside Friday Itulah and Joe Okojie, highlighted the overwhelming backing he received, which he described as a testament to the power of teamwork led by Hon. Emma Okoduwa.

However, he alleged that the PDP primary process was marred by unfair practices, claiming that State Chairman Dr. Tony Aziegbemi and other party leaders skewed the process in favor of a particular candidate. Despite the setback, Yakubu remained gracious, emphasizing that the support he received taught him the true meaning of collective effort and resilience in navigating the PDP’s challenging political structure.

“Your guidance and encouragement were pivotal,” Yakubu stated, acknowledging the time and effort his supporters invested in his campaign. He expressed confidence in their continued reliability, noting their unwavering commitment despite the outcome.

Yakubu’s campaign focused on delivering purposeful representation for Edo South. While he did not secure the PDP ticket, his message resonated with many, reflecting the district’s competitive electoral system, as seen in past elections where PDP and APC candidates closely contested Senate seats.

As the PDP prepares for the by-election, Yakubu’s remarks exposes ongoing concerns about internal party troubles, with his allegations of bias echoing sentiments from other political observers. The outcome of the primaries and the upcoming by-election will be critical for the PDP, which seeks to maintain its influence in Edo South amidst strong competition.

Yakubu’s gratitude and reflections highlight the strength of grassroots support, even in defeat, as he looks to future opportunities to serve.
