The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, signaling a strategic shift aimed at balancing power within the party ahead of the next general elections.

In a decisive move, the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) resolved that the North will retain the chairmanship position, reinforcing internal equilibrium and regional inclusivity.

At its high-stakes meeting on Monday, August 25, 2025, the NEC confirmed Umar Damagum as the substantive National Chairman of the PDP, effective immediately. His tenure will run until the much-anticipated National Convention scheduled for November 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Party insiders revealed that the decision to zone the presidency to the South was reached after weeks of consultations with key stakeholders across the country. According to sources, the move is designed to strengthen the PDP’s appeal in the southern region while maintaining northern influence at the helm of party leadership.

A top NEC member told Truth Live News, “This arrangement is to ensure fairness, unity, and inclusiveness within our party. It is a clear message that PDP is committed to equity and national balance as we prepare for 2027.”
