Some police officers attached to the Oba Market Area Command in Benin City, Edo State, are currently being detained and quizzed for allegedly collecting the sum of N300,000 from a furniture maker in the state.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Yamu, disclosed this in a statement made available to Journalists in the state.
CSP Yamu who didn’t give the names of officers, said the Command had recovered the sum of N300,000, which was allegedly extorted from a furniture maker by the detained officers.
According to him, the recovery of the money followed the circulation of a video on social media by an influencer, who alleged the extortion.
“The officers involved have been promptly identified, the money has been fully recovered and returned to the victim, while the said officers have been detained and are to face disciplinary procedures in accordance with the extant regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.
“In addition, stern administrative measures have been taken against the Oba Market Area Command to ensure professionalism, discipline, and respect for the rights of citizens in the discharge of their duties,” Yamu said.
He further encouraged members of the public to report any unprofessional conduct by officers and men of the Command to the Public Complaints Bureau (PCB) or the Complaints Response Unit (CRU) via the following dedicated telephone numbers: 0815 099 9335, 0810 038 9992.
“The Command assures the good people of Edo State that it remains committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and accountability in service delivery,” he said.
