NIGERIA, BAYELSA – Governor Doye Diri of Bayelsa State has announced his resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), ending weeks of political speculation and intense public debate across party lines in the state.
Speaking during a live broadcast monitored on AIT Online, Governor Diri said his decision followed extensive consultations with stakeholders, members of the executive council, and representatives of the state’s legislative arm.
“After thorough consultations, I, Governor Doye Diri, hereby resign my membership of the People’s Democratic Party,” he declared, addressing citizens of Bayelsa State on Tuesday, October 15, 2025.
The governor, who was re-elected under the PDP platform alongside his deputy, expressed gratitude to the people for their continued trust and support, noting that his administration had served the state faithfully for over six years.
“We represent our people as elected leaders, and we have served in that capacity with sincerity. Today’s decision was not taken lightly,” Diri stated.
According to the AIT Online report, Governor Diri emphasized that the move was based on consultations and the collective resolve of his political team. He added that his resignation would not be a solitary act.
“I am not resigning alone. The Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and several members of the State House of Assembly will be going with me,” he announced.

As of press time, neither the PDP national leadership nor its state chapter had issued an official response to the governor’s resignation.
Governor Diri assured citizens that his administration remains committed to peace, stability, and continued service delivery, regardless of political affiliation.
