Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi on Friday distanced himself and campaign team from viral campaign posters in his name on Muslim prayer mats.
Obi who issued a disclaimer in a tweet seen by Truthlive.net on Friday via his verified Tweeter handle @PeterObi described the inclusion of his picture on the praying mat by a support group as “misguided, even with the best of intentions.”
It was gathered that the prayer mats were made by support groups to be shared as campaign souvenirs to potential Muslim voters.
However, many especially Muslim faithfuls have condemned the act of printing posters on Islamic prayer mats which are considered as sacred objects of worship.
Reacting to the development, the Labour Party presidential candidate said the mats were not from his campaign team and expressed his “deep respect” for the Muslim faith.
He tweeted: “It didn’t emanate from my campaign team. I have deep respect for the Muslim faith and indeed, for every other religion. We will never mock any faith, ethnicity or gender. We are one Nigeria.”
