President Bola Tinubu is currently holding a closed-door meeting with Nigeria’s Service Chiefs at the Presidential Villa in Aso Rock.
The security chiefs were said to have arrived at the Villa forecourt and where led into the President’s office around 6:01pm.
This is President Tinubu’s first meeting with the Service Chiefs since retired General Christopher Musa was sworn in as Minister of Defence on December 4.
The session comes amid serious calls from some quarters for the sack of Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle.
Recall that there exist long-standing controversies surrounding Matawalle, primarily allegations by his successor, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, and even notorious bandit leader Bello Turji, that Matawalle had links to banditry during his tenure as governor (2019-2023).
Matawalle has vehemently denied these accusations, even swearing on the Holy Quran to his innocence and challenging his accusers to do the same.
The new comment about “consequences” for critics added fuel to the existing political friction.
However, no details of the meeting agenda have been released as at press time.
Recall that last month, President Tinubu declared a national security emergency.
He ordered new recruits for security agencies and withdrew police from the Very Important Personalities (VIPs) to strengthen operations.
