President Bola Tinubu has approved a new board for Nigeria’s electricity regulator, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), following confirmation by the Senate earlier this week.
The announcement was made on Thursday by the president’s adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Dr Mulisiu Olalekan Oseni has been appointed chairman of the commission. He formally assumed the role on 1 December 2025 and will serve until the end of his ten-year term, in line with the Electricity Act passed in 2023.
Dr Oseni joined NERC as a commissioner in 2017 and later served as vice-chairman.
Dr Yusuf Ali was appointed Vice Chairman. He joined the commission in 2022 and will hold the position until the completion of his first term.
Other members of the reconstituted board include Nathan Rogers Shatti and Dafe Akpeneye, who are both serving second terms after their initial appointments in 2017. Aisha Mahmud Kanti Bello is also continuing for a second term, having first joined the board in 2020.
Dr Chidi Ike, appointed in 2022, remains a member of the commission, while Dr Fouad Animashaun joins the board for the first time. Dr Animashaun is an energy economist and was most recently the Chief Executive of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission.
President Tinubu tasked the new board with strengthening ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s power sector, as the government seeks to improve electricity supply and regulatory oversight under the Electricity Act.
