Abia State is set to introduce 100 electric buses as part of its plan to modernise public transportation and promote environmental sustainability.

The Commissioner for Transport, Comrade Sunny Njoku, who disclosed this, said the initiative shows that the state, under Governor Alex Otti, “has embraced the future over and above PMS, diesel, and CNG.”

According to Njoku, the government has already begun constructing modern bus terminals in Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia, where the buses will operate.

He revealed that the first batch of 20 electric buses, along with 10 charging stations designed to accommodate persons with disabilities, will become operational before the end of the year. A second batch of 20 buses and additional charging infrastructure are expected to arrive early next year.

The statement added that new bus stops are nearing completion in Aba and Umuahia to enhance comfort and efficiency for commuters, while route mapping for the service is ongoing.

Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Ikechukwu Ukoha, explained that the transport system will rely on renewable energy, reducing dependence on the national grid by using solar power and battery storage.

He said the project will not only reduce carbon emissions but also improve road safety, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth across the state.

“Governor Otti’s plan for a sustainable transport system is comprehensive and promising,” Ukoha noted. “The green shuttle initiative demonstrates a strong commitment to modernising transportation, promoting sustainability, and improving citizens’ quality of life.”
