Tanker Crushes Dispatch Rider to Death in Lagos, Driver Escapes

A tanker driver has fled after a fatal collision with a dispatch rider along the Apapa–Oshodi Expressway in Lagos, leaving the rider dead.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the incident occurred around the Cele Bridge corridor of the busy expressway.

The statement revealed that the HOWO tanker, fully loaded with diesel, rammed into the dispatch motorcycle, trapping the rider beneath the vehicle. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene due to the impact.

“Security reports revealed that the tanker, while in motion, violently rammed into the dispatch motorcycle, causing the rider to become trapped underneath the tanker and die instantly,” LASTMA spokesperson, Taofiq Adebayo, said.

He added that LASTMA officials quickly secured the accident scene by placing safety cones and caution tapes to prevent further crashes and protect other road users.

“This swift intervention was undertaken to forestall further collisions and to safeguard commuters navigating the busy expressway,” he noted.

The agency confirmed that the tanker driver fled immediately after the accident, while the vehicle has since been handed over to the police for further investigation.

Police operatives also recovered the remains of the deceased from beneath the tanker and deposited them at a morgue in Yaba.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the crash as tragic and avoidable. He extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and urged the police to carry out a thorough investigation and ensure the fleeing driver is brought to justice.
