Another devastating fire has erupted at Kano’s popular Singer Market, destroying several shops in the Gidan Glass section of the market located along Ado Bayero Road by Murtala Muhammad Way.
The incident, which began on Saturday afternoon, marks the second fire outbreak at the market in less than two weeks, raising fresh concerns among traders and residents over safety measures in the commercial hub.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the blaze started around 4:00 p.m. and was still raging as of press time. A visibly distressed trader who spoke from the scene described the situation as more severe than the previous incident.
“As I speak to you now, I can see the fire burning. The whole two-storey building is under fire. This fire is even worse than the one recorded less than two weeks ago in the market,” he said.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire reportedly originated from a provision shop before spreading rapidly to adjoining stores. Thick black smoke billowed into the sky, causing panic in the densely populated market area as traders and residents scrambled to salvage their goods.
“The fire started from a shop selling provisions. Within minutes, it spread to other shops. We tried to remove some items, but the heat and smoke were too much,” another eyewitness recounted.
The inferno quickly engulfed adjoining structures, heightening fears that the blaze could consume a larger section of the market if not promptly contained.
Officials of the Kano State Fire Service arrived at the scene with a fire truck and immediately began firefighting operations. However, the initial water supply was reportedly exhausted while efforts were ongoing to control the flames. A second fire truck later joined the operation, alongside a private water tanker from Aspira Nigeria Limited, which provided additional support to combat the raging fire.
Despite these reinforcements, some traders appealed for more water tankers to prevent further destruction, as the blaze continued for hours.
As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the fire had yet to be determined. Authorities from the Kano State Fire Service disclosed that investigations were underway to ascertain the source of the outbreak.
The latest incident comes barely weeks after a similar fire devastated parts of the same market, leaving traders with heavy financial losses and compounding the economic hardship faced by business owners.
