Benin Residents Decry Govt’s Failure As Flood Submerged Houses, Shops

Residents of Benin city, Edo state have continue to lament the persistent flooding in the city, with the government appearing not to bother.

The recent downpour in some Benin metropolis witnessed the loss and destruction of properties owing to flooding.

Eghosa, Erieh streets and environs of Benin city were collided with several houses and shops submerged following the downpour that lasted several hours.

“The erosion took over the whole place and i don’t know what to do. Before you know it, it will bring the whole building down and I don’t have money to build another property, a resident cried out.

Following the flood, a resident in the area called on the government to address the incessant flooding in the city.

 

“The flood has taken over every where.We are begging the government to come to our aid. We really need gutter in the street. The government must do something now,” he said.

During the heavy downpour, Upper mission road and upper mission extension were not left out as the roads were flooded with properties destroyed.

 

In the same vein, Oba market road a popular road in Benin city was also riddled with erosion as a pedestrian was seen using a makeshift canoe to cross the road.

 

“It has been this way for decades, government has been coming and going. It’s still the same,” another resident lamented.

” I just opened the door and water just started flowing from everywhere My properties are gone. Water has carried everything. My carpet, my mattrass, my food, clothes, including my children’s clothes and shoes. If my children come back from school, they have no clothes to wear, ” a female victim rued her losses.

” It’s from the road through the gutter. If you see my room, the flood almost carried me and my baby away while we were sleeping on the bed,” another said.

The Benin golf club along GRA road Benin city was also hit by the flood, while residents of Ologboshere street off Technical College road and Ighosa off Oluku road, Benin city counted their losses with some pedestrians seen stranded as a result of the flooding.
