The Labour Party, under the leadership of National Chairman Julius Abure, has vehemently denounced the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold Bola Tinubu’s presidency, deeming it a severe blow to the principles of justice and conscience. Abure has expressed grave concerns that this ruling signals a troubling shift toward dictatorship in Nigeria, where the executive branch exerts unwarranted influence over both the judiciary and the legislature.
Furthermore, Abure has expressed fears that the government might exploit this judgment to target Labour Party leaders, including himself and the Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as a means to suppress the party’s aspirations for a rejuvenated Nigeria.
Despite this setback, Abure has called upon members and supporters of the Labour Party to remain vigilant and resolute in their pursuit of a brighter future for the nation. He has also made a heartfelt plea to the international community, urging them to stand in solidarity with the Nigerian people as they continue their struggle for democracy.
In Abure’s words, he maintains an unwavering optimism regarding the ultimate objective of achieving a new Nigeria, even in the face of adversity. He asserted, “Despite the substantial sacrifices we are making in the pursuit of the Nigeria we envision, we hold onto hope that we will reach our destination. A new Nigeria remains an attainable goal.”
Earlier today, the Supreme Court handed down its ruling, dismissing all petitions challenging Bola Tinubu’s presidential election victory, thereby affirming his win in the February 25th election. The court’s decision was based on the petitioners, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, failing to substantiate their allegations of electoral irregularities and non-compliance with the Electoral Act.
Notably, the Labour Party’s Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, embarked on an extraordinary presidential campaign journey. His switch from the PDP at the end of June 2022 to leading the Labour Party to secure victories in 12 states, win a gubernatorial seat, 7 senators and 34 House of Representatives on his debut attempt, is an unprecedented achievement in Nigerian politics, deserving the utmost respect.
