Bird Strike Disrupts United Nigeria Airlines Flight, Grounds Aircraft

United Nigeria Airlines has alerted passengers to disruptions across its network following a bird strike involving one of its Airbus A320 aircraft.

The airline disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, March 29, 2026, noting that the incident occurred on Flight UN0509 from Asaba International Airport to Murtala Muhammed International Airport, scheduled for 12:00 hours.

“Due to a bird strike on one of the engines of its operating Airbus A320 aircraft during Flight UN0509, some flights across our network will not operate as scheduled,” the airline said.

According to the statement, the aircraft has been withdrawn from service in line with safety procedures.

“In adherence to our strict safety standards, the affected aircraft has been withdrawn from service for comprehensive inspection before returning to operations,” it added.

The airline apologised to passengers for the inconvenience caused and appealed for understanding.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this unforeseen development may cause to your travel plans and kindly appeal for the understanding and patience of our valued passengers and the general public,” the statement read.

The development comes amid a series of similar incidents involving the airline. Reports indicate that this marks the fourth occurrence within a month, underscoring ongoing challenges with bird strikes affecting flight operations in the country.

A recent incident was recorded at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, where an Airbus A320 operating Flight UN0519 from Abuja to Lagos reportedly encountered birds during takeoff.

United Nigeria Airlines reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high safety standards, assuring passengers that efforts are underway to minimise disruptions.

“Our team is working diligently to minimise disruptions and provide support to all affected travellers,” the statement added.
