Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has officially sworn in his new deputy, Hon. Murtala Sule Garo, today, Tuesday, May 5, 2026. The ceremony took place at 11:00 a.m. at the Coronation Hall inside the Government House in Kano, with senior government officials, party leaders, and other distinguished guests in attendance.
His confirmation by the Kano State House of Assembly followed a successful screening by an ad hoc committee set up by the House. Presenting the committee’s report, the Chairman and Deputy Speaker, Muhammad Bello, said Garo’s nomination came after the resignation of the former Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, creating a vacancy that needed to be filled.
According to Channels Television, the exercise was conducted in line with Section 191(3)(c) of the 1999 Constitution, which empowers the Assembly to approve a nominee in the event of a vacancy.
During the screening, Garo answered questions covering his educational background, professional experience, understanding of governance, and vision for the state.
The committee found that he demonstrated a clear understanding of the responsibilities of the office and presented a workable vision to support the Yusuf administration in delivering on its mandate. Following the adoption of the report, Speaker Falgore put the decision to the floor of the House, where members unanimously approved the nomination.
Governor Yusuf had also defended his choice personally. “We sought someone who could offer meaningful and matching contributions to the growth of Kano. Murtala Sule Garo has a track record of service, and we believe his experience and dedication will complement the state’s development agenda,” the governor said in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad.
Garo, replaces Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who resigned on March 27. Before his appointment, Garo had served as the gubernatorial running mate to the All Progressives Congress candidate, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, in the 2023 elections.
