The Senate has entered a closed session to discuss President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

This move comes after Tinubu suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months.

The closed session was announced after Senate President Godswill Akpabio read a letter from Tinubu during Thursday’s plenary session.

Senate leader Opeyemi Bamidele moved a motion for the closed session, which was seconded by Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro.

Truth Live News had earlier reported that the House of Representatives had already given its official clearance to the emergency rule proclamation.

Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State was made due to prolonged political instability, constitutional breaches, and security threats.

The crisis is rooted in a power struggle between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

Recall that Vice Admiral Ibok-Étè Ibas has been appointed as the sole administrator to oversee the state’s affairs until normalcy is restored.
