The Supreme Court has declared the local government election conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) on October 5, 2024, invalid due to gross violations of the Electoral Act.
Delivering the judgment, Justice Jamilu Tukur ruled that RSIEC’s actions were void, citing a lack of substantial compliance with electoral guidelines. The court found that the commission continued voter registration even after announcing the election date, a clear breach of due process.
Justice Tukur emphasized that the processes leading to the election were “abridged in clear violation of Section 150 of the Electoral Act,” rendering the entire exercise unlawful.
