Two more members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have joined calls for their colleagues to drop impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, bringing the number of dissenting voices to four in just two days.
Hon. Barile Nwakoh (Khana Constituency I) and Hon. Emilia Amadi (Obio/Akpor Constituency II) made the appeal during a press briefing in Port Harcourt, following a similar public stance taken on Monday by Minority Leader Hon. Sylvanus Eyinna Nwankwo (Omuma Constituency) and Hon. Peter Abbey (Degema Constituency).
Truth Live News confirmed that the lawmakers advocated for restraint, dialogue, and reconciliation as alternatives to impeachment amid the escalating rift between the state’s legislative and executive arms.
At the briefing, Nwankwo, who serves as Minority Leader, revealed that the House had received appeals from prominent leaders within and outside Rivers State urging leniency. He encouraged his colleagues to reconsider the impeachment process and pursue peaceful resolutions.
Abbey acknowledged potential constitutional infractions by the governor but emphasised the need for understanding. “While the governor may have violated constitutional provisions, it is important to recognise that mistakes can occur,” he said. He added that the governor bears responsibility to ensure such breaches “do not recur in the future.”
The fresh appeals come as the political crisis in Rivers State continues to draw national attention, with observers warning that prolonged confrontation could further destabilise governance in the oil-rich state.
