Olukayode Ariwoola, Nigeria’s Chief Justice, will swear in 11 new justices for the supreme court on Monday.

This event, according to Festus Akande, the spokesperson for the supreme court, will take place at 10 am in the main courtroom of the apex court.

In December 2023, President Bola Tinubu requested the senate to confirm 11 judges from the court of appeal as supreme court justices. This followed the recommendation of these judges by the National Judicial Council (NJC) for promotion.

Currently, the supreme court has 10 justices due to the passing of Centus Nweze and the retirement of Amina Augie and Dattijo Muhammad. On December 21, 2023, the senate confirmed the promotion of the recommended judges.

The newly confirmed justices are Jummai Hannatu Sankey, Chidiebere Nwaoma Uwa, Chioma Egondu Nwosu-Iheme, Haruna Simon Tsammani, Moore Aseimo A. Adumein, Obande Festus Ogbuinya, Stephen Jonah Adah, Habeeb Adewale O. Abiru, Jamilu Yammama Tukur, Abubakar Sadiq Umar, and Mohammed Baba Idris.

With the swearing-in of these new justices, the supreme court will have its full complement of 21 justices as required by the constitution.
