The Force Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, Muyiwa Adejobi, has been promoted to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police, despite growing public criticism over his style of communication and handling of sensitive issues.
Adejobi, who has served as the public face of the police from the Force Headquarters in Abuja, received the promotion in August 2025. Reports indicated that his leadership of the Force’s public relations unit has been marked by efforts to modernize communication and rebuild public trust.
However, Adejobi’s tenure has not been without controversy. Civil society groups and activists have repeatedly accused him of using his position to suppress dissent and shield the police from accountability. Human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju alleged that the spokesman used his office to silence critics of the police, while Omoyele Sowore accused him of orchestrating attempts to intimidate and arrest opponents. In May, SaharaReporters reported that Adejobi allegedly relied on external youth groups such as the South West Youth Alliance (SWYA) to circulate unofficial propaganda materials in defence of the police.
Earlier this year, Adejobi also faced backlash after defending police officers accused of forcefully invading private properties without warrants, a position that drew condemnation from the Take It Back (TIB) Movement. Despite these criticisms, police authorities have continued to back him, signalling confidence in his role as the image-maker of the Force.
However, at the time of this report, there has been no official statement from the Nigeria Police confirming any redeployment of Adejobi away from the Force Headquarters.
