Gunmen Raid Benue Checkpoint, Leave One Dead, Two Wounded

Panic gripped Abaji Town in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State after armed bandits stormed a Civil Protection Guard checkpoint, killing one person and leaving two others with gunshot wounds.

The attack, which occurred on Wednesday, March 4, was revealed by security expert Zagazola Makama, who cited security sources while reporting the incident in a post shared on twitter (X) on Thursday.

The victim who lost his life was identified as Aondohemba Kavee, a 43-year-old man who was shot during the attack. Two others, Orgase Nyikya and a passerby, Tyolumum Tsenongu were also hit by bullets and sustained injuries during the violent assault.

Makama stated, “Armed bandits attacked a Civil Protection Guard checkpoint at Abaji Town in Katsina-Ala LGA, killing one person and injuring two others.”

He further explained that both injured victims were quickly taken to Katsina-Ala General Hospital for urgent treatment, while the remains of the deceased were taken to the hospital’s mortuary.

“The injured victims were rushed to Katsina-Ala General Hospital for treatment, while the deceased’s body was deposited in the hospital mortuary,” Makama added.

Following the attack, Army troops and other security operatives reportedly moved into the area and secured the scene. During the operation, two suspects believed to be connected to the attack were arrested, while security personnel began tracking other members of the gang who managed to escape.

Efforts to get a response from the Benue State Police Command did not yield results, as the state police spokesperson Udeme Edet did not respond to phone calls or text messages at the time the report was filed.

The incident comes amid continuing security concerns across several communities in the state. Earlier in February, renewed violence in Apa Local Government Area of Benue State reportedly left two people dead, underscoring the persistent insecurity affecting residents in the region.
