The Nigeria Police Force in Ekiti State have arrested a suspect in connection with a recent robbery attack on student hostels of Ekiti State University (EKSU).
The arrest was confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, who disclosed that items believed to have been used during the operation were recovered.
According to him, “On 27th March, 2026, the Command received a distress information that some suspected thieves, who came on a motorcycle, forcibly entered some hostels where students… reside and stole their phones.”
The attack, which occurred in the Iworoko area, reportedly caused panic among students, forcing many to flee for safety as the assailants moved from one hostel to another, dispossessing occupants of valuables including mobile phones, laptops, and cash.
A student, identified simply as Olusola, described the incident as traumatic, saying: “We are supposed to be preparing for our examinations. We need help.”
Police said the suspect was arrested on March 30 at about 2:30 pm following swift action by operatives of the Iworoko Divisional Headquarters.
Recovered items include a face mask and a motorcycle suspected to have been used in carrying out the robbery.
The suspect has since been transferred to the State Police Headquarters for further investigation and possible arrest of other fleeing members of the gang.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Micheal Falade, has urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly.
Abutu added that “necessary measures have been put in place to forestall the recurrence of such incidents… across the state.”
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
