The Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed the detention of all individuals linked to the tragic death of two young sisters at the General Hospital in Zuru.
The victims, aged three and six, reportedly died on March 18 after allegedly being given the wrong medication during treatment, sparking widespread public concern.
Police spokesperson, Nafi’u Abubakar, confirmed that arrests have been made and investigations are currently ongoing. He assured that the authorities are taking the matter seriously.
In response to the incident, the state government, under Governor Nasir Idris, has set up a special investigative panel. The committee has already begun sittings in Zuru to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
According to a statement issued by Ahmad Aliyu, media aide to the Commissioner for Information and Culture, several key medical personnel have appeared before the panel. These include the principal medical officer, Dr. Thomas Gode; medical officer, Dr. Mohammed Fakai; and the nurses who attended to the children during their stay at the hospital.
The parents of the deceased, led by their father, Ibrahim Shuni, also testified before the panel, sharing their account of the events leading up to the deaths.
During proceedings, hospital staff highlighted communication lapses among medical personnel as a major concern. They emphasized the need for better teamwork, prompt consultations, and strict adherence to medical ethics, especially in critical, life-threatening situations.
The panel chairman, Yakubu Ahmed BK, urged healthcare workers to uphold professional standards and avoid errors that could cost lives.
Similarly, the Commissioner for Health, Ismaila Yakubu Augie, called for stronger collaboration across all levels of the healthcare system to improve service delivery.
The committee is expected to continue its sittings, with more witnesses scheduled to appear as the investigation progresses.
