Seven Nigerian Police Officers Face Trial Over Extortion Allegations in Imo State

Seven police officers in south-eastern Nigeria’s Imo State are facing internal disciplinary proceedings following allegations of extortion and abuse of authority, police authorities have confirmed.

The Imo State Police Command said the officers have been placed on an Orderly Room Trial, a formal internal process used to investigate misconduct within the force after complainants identified them in connection with the alleged offences.

Those involved include three inspectors, one sergeant and three police constables drawn from units such as the Anti-Vice Unit, Rapid Response Squad and the Search and Flush Unit.

The action follows public outrage after a video circulated widely on social media, allegedly showing security operatives extorting members of the public during a Joint Task Force operation at Seven-and-a-Half Junction in Obowo Local Government Area.

Police say officers from other security agencies seen in the footage have been handed over to their respective organisations for disciplinary action, highlighting what authorities describe as a coordinated response to misconduct.

The Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Aboki Danjuma, said the investigation would be conducted thoroughly and transparently, in line with police regulations. He added that the outcome of the trial would be made public once concluded.

Mr Danjuma reiterated that the command has a zero-tolerance policy towards extortion, intimidation and unprofessional behaviour, stressing the need to restore public confidence in the police.

He also urged residents to continue reporting cases of misconduct through official complaint channels, assuring the public that all credible reports would be treated fairly and seriously.
