Abuja Residents Fault Distribution Company Over ‘Epileptic’ Electricity Despite Premium Tariff

Residents in Karu, Apo Resettlement, Kubwa and Gwarimpa have raised fresh concerns over what they describe as persistent and erratic electricity supply, despite being classified under the premium Band A category in the Federal Capital Territory.

The complaints gained traction after a resident, Amina Ibrahim (@minetbabe), took to X (formerly Twitter) to decry what she termed “epileptic” power supply. She alleged that electricity comes on for “a maximum of 30 minutes and goes off for 8 hours,” adding that the situation had lasted for three consecutive days. She called on the electricity distribution company to urgently intervene, stressing that her claims were not exaggerated.

In response, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) apologized for the inconvenience and requested that the complainant provide her meter number and phone number via direct message to enable prompt resolution of the issue.

The development has since sparked broader reactions online, with other residents in Karu, Apo Resettlement, Kubwa and Gwarimpa alleging similar experiences of load shedding and irregular supply without official communication from the distribution company.

Under the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s service-based tariff framework, Band A customers are expected to receive a minimum of 20 hours of electricity daily.

As of the time of filing this report, AEDC had yet to issue a comprehensive public statement addressing the reported outages across the affected districts. Residents are calling for improved transparency and strict adherence to the promised service standards.
