Edo 2024: Ighodalo Demands Apology, N20 Billion Damages from Oshiomhole Over Defamatory Remarks

Dr. Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the upcoming September 21 Edo State governorship election, has issued a formal demand for N20 billion in damages from Adams Oshiomhole, a key figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and current senator. The demand follows what Ighodalo describes as “malicious defamatory statements” made by Oshiomhole during a political rally held in Benin City on Saturday, September 14, 2024.

Oshiomhole had publicly alleged that Ighodalo was involved in a notorious ponzi scheme known as ‘PLANWELL,’ which defrauded numerous Nigerians of their savings. This accusation, made in the heat of the ongoing political campaign, has drawn sharp criticism from Ighodalo and his legal team. The claim has been described as reckless and entirely baseless.

In a strongly worded letter dated September 16, 2024, and signed by Chief Ayo Asala, SAN, of Ayo Asala and Associates, Ighodalo’s legal team emphasized the gravity of the allegations. Titled “Re: Defamatory Statements Made in Respect of Dr Asue Ighodalo,” the letter states, “Despite your standing as an elder and public officeholder, you have repeatedly engaged in spreading falsehoods for political gain. Your latest claims regarding our client’s involvement in the ‘PLANWELL’ scheme are baseless, malicious, and designed solely to tarnish his good name.”

The letter went on to assert that Ighodalo, a well-regarded lawyer and corporate leader, has no ties to the ponzi scheme in question. “Our client’s professional and personal achievements are well documented, and he has no association whatsoever with the ‘PLANWELL’ scheme or any other financial misconduct. These false allegations serve only to advance your political agenda at the expense of our client’s reputation,” the letter reads.

As a result of Oshiomhole’s remarks, Ighodalo has faced a barrage of inquiries and concerns from the public, friends, and professional colleagues, all deeply troubled by the accusations. In response, Ighodalo is demanding an immediate retraction and apology, to be broadcast on at least two national television networks and published in three national newspapers. Additionally, he is seeking N20 billion in damages for the harm done to his reputation.

The letter concludes with a clear ultimatum: should Oshiomhole fail to comply with the demands, legal action will be initiated without further notice. This is not the first instance of Oshiomhole targeting Ighodalo with defamatory remarks. Just weeks prior, Ighodalo filed a N20 billion lawsuit against Oshiomhole for a similar attack on his character, underscoring what appears to be an ongoing effort by Oshiomhole to discredit his political rival ahead of the Edo governorship race.
