In a major political shift, over 975 members from various parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party (LP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Young Progressives Party (YPP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP), have defected to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Igueben Local Government Area, Edo State.
The defection event took place at the PDP LGA Secretariat on July 10, 2024, with several high-ranking PDP leaders in attendance. These included High Chief Tom Ikimi, the National Leader of the PDP in Edo Central Senatorial District, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, the PDP State Chairman, and Barr. Dr. Asuerinme Akintunde Ighodalo, the PDP Candidate for Edo 2024.
Key figures leading the defectors included former LGA Executive Chairman Silvanus Igbogbo, 2023 LP House Assembly Candidate Engr. Obehi Ayemere, Chief Mike Enimiye, Chief Harrison Akahome, and Mr. Joseph Aghedo.
High Chief Tom Ikimi, in his address, debunked the opposition’s claims, stating that the “APC has resorted to lies and propaganda due to their lack of substance.” He reaffirmed the PDP’s commitment to good governance, emphasizing that “Barr. Asuerinme Ighodalo remains our party’s candidate for the Edo 2024 election.”
Dr. Tony Aziegbemi welcomed the new members, assuring them of a warm reception into the PDP family, and stating, “Our party’s umbrella is large enough to accommodate everyone.”
Barr. Dr. Asuerinme Ighodalo expressed his gratitude for the support from Igueben LGA, promising to deliver good governance for Edo State.
He stated, “When we resume office by the Grace of God, we will provide good governance. But we are going to work, work, and work.”
Prominent PDP leaders, including Rt. Hon. Chief Joe Edionwele, Hon. Mrs. Philomena Ihenyen, Archbishop Anthony Okosun, Rt. Hon. Barr. Friday Itulah, Hon. Barr. Felix Omi Imoisili, and Hon. John Inegbedion, were present at the event.
This significant defection highlights the growing strength of the PDP in Edo State and their commitment to good governance, positioning them strongly for the upcoming election.
