
NELFUND Disburses N1.3 Billion in Student Loans to 17,599 ABU Beneficiaries for 2026 Academic Year
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund has disbursed a total of N1,301,584,250 to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in Kaduna State for the 2026 academic year with 17,599 students across the institution benefiting from the federal government’s student loan scheme.
The disbursement was acknowledged in an official letter dated March 17, 2026 and signed by ABU Vice-Chancellor Professor Adamu Ahmed, addressed to the Managing Director and Chief Executive of NELFUND at its Wuse 2 office in Abuja.
The funds were disbursed across three separate transactions in February 2026. The first payment of N545,144,750 covering 7,570 students and the second payment of N571,204,125 covering 7,572 students were both processed on Friday February 13, 2026. A third and final tranche of N185,235,375 covering 2,457 students was processed on Wednesday February 18, 2026 bringing the total to N1,301,584,250 across 17,599 beneficiaries.
In the acknowledgment letter, the ABU management expressed appreciation to NELFUND for facilitating the financial support. “The University Management appreciates your efforts in facilitating this financial support which has gone a long way in assisting our students in their academic pursuits,” Vice-Chancellor Professor Adamu Ahmed wrote.
The disbursement to ABU is part of NELFUND’s broader rollout of the federal student loan programme introduced under President Bola Tinubu’s administration designed to make higher education accessible to Nigerians regardless of their financial background by providing interest-free loans repayable after graduation and employment.
ABU’s 17,599 beneficiaries represent one of the largest single institution disbursements recorded under the scheme to date.
