The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has intercepted twenty-one trucks loaded with food and non-food items en route from Nigeria to N’djamena, Chad Republic, and Cameroon.
According to a statement by EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, the interception took place during a sting operation conducted by operatives of the Maiduguri Zonal Command along major exit routes in Borno State.
Oyewale stated that the individuals apprehended with the trucks will face charges once investigations are concluded. He explained that the food items were cleverly concealed within the trucks, but EFCC operatives’ vigilance prevented them from going undetected.
He said, “Investigation showed food items cleverly concealed in the trucks that would have gone undetected but for the eagle-eyed vigilance of operatives of the commission.
“Further checks showed the Waybills covering the goods carried by the trucks indicated their destinations as N’djamena, Chad Republic, Central Africa Republic and Cameroon respectively”
He further explained that the commission anticipates that the arrest of these trucks will help curb food insecurity caused by the smuggling activities of unscrupulous individuals across the country.
