Ahmed Ololade, a Nigeria singer, rapper and songwriter popularly known as Asake has opened up about a bold decision from his teenage years, revealing that he left home at just 15 to pursue a career in music against his father’s wishes.
Speaking during an interview with Korty EO, the 31-year-old artiste reflected on the strained moment, explaining that his father’s strong personality made it difficult for him to seek approval.
“The father who gave birth to me is even more stubborn than I am, so I couldn’t face him. We were close when we were younger, but there was a time I wanted to leave home to do what I’m doing now, and he said no. I still left,” he said.
According to the singer, his determination at the time outweighed any opposition.
“I was 15. I was just focused on where I was going, and there was nothing anyone could tell me.”
Asake eventually rose to prominence in 2020 following the release of his breakout single Lady, which brought him into the spotlight.
His career took a major leap in February 2022 when he joined YBNL, further cementing his place in the industry.
Since then, he has released three successful studio albums — Mr Money With The Vibes (2022), Work of Art (2023), and Lungu Boy (2024).
Now regarded as one of the leading voices in Afrobeats, the award-winning singer has earned multiple nominations and accolades. He was also nominated for the Grammy Awards in the Best African Music Performance category but lost out to Tems.
