The former Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, and his wife, Betsy, have announced a ₦10 million cash reward for the players and technical crew of Edo Queens following their nomination as CAF Women’s Club of the Year.
Celebrating the team’s stellar performance in the recently concluded CAF Champions League, the couple highlighted Edo Queens’ achievements as both the reigning champions of the Nigerian Women’s Football League (NWFL) and a continental force recognized by CAF.
In a statement issued by Crusoe Osagie, Media Adviser to the former governor, Obaseki noted that the team’s accomplishments reflect the transformative impact of investments and reforms in Edo State’s sports sector during his administration from 2016 to 2024.
“Our superstar Edo Queens have continued to make us proud with their exploits and achievements, which have placed Edo State and Nigeria on the football map of Africa,” the statement read. “Having conquered Nigeria as NWFL champions, they have now made their mark on the continental stage with their nomination as CAF Women’s Club of the Year.”
Obaseki also credited the success to initiatives like the Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament (BOWFT), a pre-season platform that helped discover and nurture local talent. “Through bold efforts, we built a strong foundation for the success we are celebrating today,” the statement added.
The reward underscores the Obasekis’ commitment to recognizing excellence and promoting grassroots sports development, especially for women and youth.
