Renowned human rights advocate, Femi Falana, has called upon the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, to ensure the safety of demonstrators planning to participate in the upcoming protest organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
The protest, scheduled for February 27 and 28, aims to address the economic hardships faced by Nigerians, exacerbated by the recent removal of fuel subsidy and the depreciation of the naira.
In a letter dated February 24 and directed to the Attorney General, Falana cited Section 83(4) of the Police Establishment Act, which grants the Minister of Justice authority to provide security for protesters.
He urged the Attorney General to utilize this provision to safeguard the rights and safety of the demonstrators.
Additionally, Falana emphasized the importance of conducting the rallies peacefully, without resorting to violence. He urged the organized labor to maintain decorum during the protests.
The letter partly reads, “While we have advised the members of the NLC to conduct the rallies scheduled for February 27-28, 2024 in a peaceful manner, we urge you to use your good offices to direct the Inspector-General of Police to provide adequate security to the conveners and participants in the protest in line with the provisions of Section 83(4) of the Police Establishment Act.
“Finally, while awaiting your favourable reply to this letter, please accept, as usual, the assurance of our highest esteem.”
