The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Executive Committee has announced several significant policy and project approvals aimed at advancing agriculture, education, and urban management in Abuja. These decisions were disclosed following the committee’s meeting held on Monday, November 25, 2024, chaired by the FCT Minister, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike.
Boost for Dry Season Farming
The FCT Executive Committee approved the procurement of essential agricultural inputs to support dry-season farming. Malam Lawan Geidam, Mandate Secretary of the FCT Agric and Rural Development Secretariat, revealed that the approvals include 300 metric tons each of NPK and Urea fertilizers, 310 NAFSAT sprayers, and 3,500 liters of liquid fertilizer.
“This marks the first time such a comprehensive approval has been granted in the FCT to encourage all-year-round farming,” Geidam said. He expressed gratitude to the Minister, noting that this initiative will enhance food security in the nation’s capital. He added, “As the rainy season ends, we are transitioning into irrigation farming to sustain agricultural productivity throughout the year.”
Digital Transformation in Education
The committee also approved contracts for the digitization of the education system in FCT Senior Secondary Schools. Dr. Danlami Hayyo, Mandate Secretary of the FCT Education Secretariat, disclosed that 1,000 laptops integrated with vocational and educational curriculum content will be provided to schools at a cost of ₦990 million.
“This initiative will transform teaching and learning in FCT schools from traditional classroom methods to a digital education system,” Hayyo stated. He emphasized that this modernization will significantly enhance students’ performance in examinations like JAMB and, in the future, WAEC and NECO, which are transitioning to computer-based tests (CBTs).
Relocation of Apo Mechanics
The relocation of Apo automobile mechanics and spare parts dealers from road corridors to a permanent site in Wasa District was another focus of the meeting. Chief Felix Obuah, Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), highlighted the committee’s efforts to address concerns and ensure a smooth transition for traders.
“The FCT Minister is exploring ways to ease the financial burden on traders to ensure no one is unfairly treated,” Obuah said. He noted that out of 15,000 enumerated traders, 12,000 have applied for relocation to the new site. The relocation will pave the way for the construction of the OSEX road.
The committee also resolved to set up an oversight body to guarantee fairness in the relocation process.
New Office Complex for Body of Benchers
In a related development, Barr. Salman Dako, FCTA General Counsel, announced the approval of a contract for the design, construction, and furnishing of a new office complex for the Body of Benchers in Abuja.
“This project will provide a conducive environment for the Body of Benchers to execute their statutory functions,” Dako stated. The contractor has been given a 10-month timeline to complete the project, ensuring that the complex will be ready by late 2025.
According to the state sent to Truth Live News International, theese initiatives demonstrate the FCT administration’s commitment to fostering sustainable development in agriculture, education, and urban management. With these approvals, the FCT aims to enhance the quality of life for its residents and strengthen its position as a model for national development.
