AFCON 2025 Controversy: Luis de la Fuente Urges Respect for CAF Ruling

Spain national team coach Luis de la Fuente has reacted to the controversy surrounding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, following the decision by the Confederation of African Football to strip Senegal of the trophy and award it to Morocco.

Speaking on the issue, De la Fuente stressed the importance of professionalism and respect for decisions made by football authorities, regardless of personal opinions. He acknowledged that while such rulings can be frustrating, they are part of the game’s regulatory structure.

According to him, those responsible for making decisions must be allowed to do their job, while players and officials are expected to respect and abide by the outcome.

The controversy began after CAF ruled that Senegal forfeited the AFCON final, leading to Morocco being declared winners. The decision has sparked widespread debate across the football community.

Despite the ruling, Senegal publicly celebrated the title, parading the trophy in front of thousands of fans in Paris ahead of an international friendly match. The symbolic gesture highlighted the country’s rejection of the decision and its insistence on being recognised as rightful champions.

Senegal has since taken the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, seeking to overturn CAF’s verdict. A final decision is expected in the coming weeks.

The outcome of the case could have significant implications for the credibility of African football competitions and governance under CAF.
