Former Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, recounted his experience of surviving an assassination attempt when armed assailants attacked his convoy in the Ihube community along the Okigwe-Enugu expressway on Friday. Unfortunately, one of the police officers in the convoy lost his life during the attack.
Okorocha confirmed the incident and shared the details on Sunday while speaking at the birthday anniversary celebration of Samuel Anyanwu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the upcoming governorship election in Imo State. He expressed his sadness over the loss of the police officer and described the incident as unfortunate. Okorocha also criticized the competence of some individuals aspiring to govern Imo State.
According to Okorocha, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State had provided vehicles and security personnel to transport him and his team to Imo State for the burial ceremony of Emeka Ihedioha’s mother, following Okorocha’s attendance at the burial ceremony of the wife of former Senate President Ken Nnamani in Enugu. The attack occurred after Okorocha had already attended the funeral in Mbaise, and his convoy had dropped him off at his residence in Owerri, while returning to Enugu.
Okorocha expressed his disappointment, highlighting that he remained safe during his time in Enugu but was attacked and had a security agent killed in his own state. He expressed anger over the situation and emphasized that many individuals vying for leadership in Imo State lack the necessary capabilities, except for one person he believes is suitable. He concluded by stating that he will address this matter at the appropriate time.
Furthermore, one of Okorocha’s aides mentioned that the convoy’s vehicles, including a Sports Utility Vehicle, a bus, and a Hilux, sustained damage from bullets during the attack.
