The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that it will comply with a Federal High Court ruling in Lagos that restrains it from arresting or fining drivers with faded number plates.

Truthlive news gathered that FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide told Punch that while the corps is still reviewing the judgment, it would not take any action that disrespects the court’s decision.

The ruling, delivered on January 17, 2025, followed a case filed by a concerned citizen, Chinwike Ezebube. He argued that since the FRSC is responsible for designing and producing vehicle number plates in Nigeria, it should also be accountable for their quality and durability.

The court examined whether drivers should be penalized for using faded number plates, which may deteriorate due to production quality.

In response, Ogungbemide stated that faded number plates result from normal wear and tear, not poor manufacturing. He pointed out that the National Road Traffic Regulations of 2012 (as amended) allow vehicle owners to apply for replacements if their plates become lost or damaged.

“The corps is studying the court’s judgment but will not do anything to disrespect the court or its decision,” he said.

He reiterated the FRSC’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, adding that the agency would continue to operate within the legal framework while ensuring road safety compliance.
