Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has criticized Erik ten Hag’s transfer decisions, labeling two of his signings as “the worst” in the club’s history.
Recall that Ten Hag was sacked earlier this week following a 2–1 loss to West Ham, just four months after being handed a contract extension.
Reacting to his sack, Neville pointed to the Dutchman’s recruitment record as a major factor in his downfall.
“Ten Hag oversaw two of the worst transfers Manchester United will ever have made — Casemiro and Antony.
“They were signed in a panic for £140–150m after losses to Brentford and Brighton,” Neville said on “The Overlap”.
Manchester United spent £80m on Antony from Ajax and £70m on Casemiro in the summer of 2022.
Neville, however, expressed hope that Casemiro would still prove valuable to the club and Antony would improve.
Ten Hag’s departure comes after United’s lowest-ever league finish last season and their current 14th place in the Premier League.
