The Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) and the Assembly of Healthcare Professionals Association (AHPA) have suspended their seven-day warning strike, effective from midnight, October 31, 2024.

The decision was reached after an emergency meeting of the Expanded National Executive Council (NEC) of the Union, which comprised presidents and general secretaries of JOHESU affiliate unions and professional associations, national executive council members, and JOHESU chairmen and secretaries at the state and branch levels.

According to JOHESU National Chairman, Mr. Kabiru Minjibir, the suspension is in line with the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Union and the Federal Government during a conciliation meeting held on October 29 at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.

The MoU addressed the Union’s long-standing demands, including immediate implementation of CONHESS adjustment, payment of 25% CONHESS review arrears, payment of nine months’ salary to staff of regulatory agencies, restoration of funding to the Environmental Health Regulatory Council, reconstitution of boards/governing councils of federal health institutions, and commencement of the process to upwardly review retirement age of health workers.

The Union has given the Federal Government six weeks to meet its obligations outlined in the MoU, stressing that failure to comply may lead to an indefinite strike action.

“We have suspended the warning strike in the spirit of the MoU and in general public interest.

“However, we will reconvene an expanded NEC meeting upon the expiration of the six-week deadline to review progress and take appropriate decisions,” Minjibir stated.

Truth Live News reports that JOHESU went on a seven-day warning strike on October 25 to press home its demands.
