Katsina Cracks Down on Malnutrition, Unveils 62 Nutrition Centres, Threatens Offenders

The Katsina State Government has unveiled two stabilisation centres and 60 Outpatient Therapeutic Programme (OTP) sites across 12 local government areas as part of efforts to combat malnutrition.

Governor Dikko Radda announced the initiative on Sunday, April 12, 2026, in Baure, stating that it is designed to improve access to treatment for children suffering from severe acute malnutrition.

According to the governor, the stabilisation centres are located in Daura and Baure, while the outpatient sites span several councils, including Funtua, Danja, Malumfashi, and Ingawa.

He explained that the centres would offer free treatment, while the OTP sites would focus on early detection and community-based care.

“These communities have been underserved for too long. Today, that gap is being closed, and that injustice is being addressed,” Radda said.

The governor also issued a stern warning against the diversion or sale of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF), stressing that offenders would face prosecution.

“I have approved a mobile court to handle such cases. Anyone diverting or selling RUTF will face immediate legal action, with no exceptions,” he added.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr Lawal Rabe, disclosed that the state had approved ₦700 million as counterpart funding for the Accelerated Nutrition Results in Nigeria programme.

He added that several primary healthcare centres across the state are being upgraded to general hospitals.

The Chairperson of the State Nutrition Committee, Ruqayya Hamza, said the 60 outpatient sites were strategically located in underserved communities to enhance early detection and treatment of malnutrition.

She noted that over 600 community volunteers and 300 health workers had been trained to support the programme, with measures in place to ensure accountability in the distribution of nutrition supplies.

Also speaking, the Chairman of Baure Local Government Area, Saminu Sulaiman, said the new centres would reduce the need for residents to seek medical care in neighbouring Niger Republic.
