The House of Representatives, on Thursday adopted a motion mandating the Federal Roads Maintanance Agency (FERMA) and Federal Ministry of Works to commence immediate repair and reconstruction of the deplorable Oba-Nnewi-Aguata- Akokwa-Arondizuogu-Okigwe Road in Anambra and Imo States which was said to have turned to death trap in the recent time.
The motion was sponsored by Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere Ikeagwuonu representing Ideato North and South federal constituency of Imo State at the plenary.
In his opening statement, Hon. Ugochinyere said that the long-ignored Oba-Aguata-Akokwa-Arondizuogu-Okigwe route had not only claimed many lives but had also turned into a haven for armed criminals who terrorize innocent bystanders on a nearly daily basis.
He continued by saying that with the arrival of the rain, the already poor condition of the road had gotten worse and the residents of the affected communities were no longer able to go about their daily lives in the open because their lives and property were now in danger from the torrential erosions that result from the rain.
Citing Section 14 (2) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, which mandates the Federal Government to ensure security and welfare of the people, Hon. Ugochinyere urged the House to pressure the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to start full-scale rehabilitation of the said road in order to lessen the suffering of the people of Akokwa, Arondizuogu, and Okigwe in Imo State.
The resolution was backed by Hon. Uche Elodimuo (Nnewi North/Nnewi South and Ekwusigo federal constituency), Hon. Uchenna Okonkwo (Idemili North/South federal constituency), and Hon. Dom Okafor (Aguata federal constituency).
Therefore, to guarantee that the resolution was fully implemented, the House of Representatives’ Speaker, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, sent the motion to the yet-to-be constituted House Committee on Works .
