The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has publicly expressed his support for his former wife, Naomi Silekunola, following her ongoing legal battles stemming from the tragic stampede at a Christmas funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State. The incident, which occurred on December 4, 2024, resulted in the loss of 35 young lives, leaving the nation in mourning.

Oba Ogunwusi assured Silekunola that her intentions in organizing the event were noble and aimed at spreading joy to underprivileged children. He emphasized her innocence, stating that she bore no malicious intent towards the children or other attendees. The Ooni’s declaration came amid heightened scrutiny over the safety lapses alleged to have contributed to the disaster.

Silekunola, alongside Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, proprietor of Agidigbo FM, and Abdullahi Fasasi, Principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, is facing a four-count charge. The charges include conspiracy, causing death by negligence, endangering public safety, and failure to provide adequate security and medical facilities at the event.

Following the December 24, 2024 remand order by an Ibadan Magistrate’s Court, the defendants have remained in custody. Justice K.B. Olawoyin of the State High Court in Ibadan recently denied their bail applications, citing the gravity of the charges. The judge has adjourned further rulings on the matter until Monday, January 13, 2025.

The tragedy has sparked widespread debate over event safety protocols and the responsibilities of organizers. Public reactions remain mixed, with many sympathizing with the organizers’ initial intentions but demanding accountability for the lapses that led to the catastrophe.

As the legal proceedings continue, the Ooni’s endorsement of Silekunola is seen as a significant gesture, underscoring her commitment to the welfare of children and the community. However, it remains to be seen how the courts will rule as the case progresses.
