Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has criticized the procedure that led to his removal from office, calling it unconstitutional.

Speaking to supporters at the Speaker’s Lodge in Ikeja GRA on Saturday morning, Obasa dismissed allegations of financial misappropriation leveled against him by lawmakers as “impossible.”

“The house did not adhere to constitutional processes in removing me from office,” he said.

“I am not disturbed or afraid of the developments. There’s no impeachment in the assembly—probably, there’s a mistake from them. You can only remove the speaker, and if you must, you must ensure you follow the rules of the game.”

Obasa, who has been a member of the assembly since 2003 and served as Speaker since 2015, added that he is unbothered by his removal.

“What else am I looking for if I’ve served as speaker and a member of the house up till now?” he asked.

The former speaker was removed on January 13 while he was out of the country. Lawmakers accused him of gross misconduct and abuse of office. Following his removal, Mojisola Meranda, his deputy, was elected as the new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
